Introducing – Ann Widdecombe – The UK’s Most Outspoken Politician

Ann Widdecombe: the former British MP, Minister, Shadow Home Secretary, author, TV Personality and newspaper columnist.

Ann is a devout Christian with unapologetically traditional views.

Ann is a regular on British television – having fronted her own documentaries, hosted news-centric TV shows and even appearing on the UK’s version of Dancing with the Stars and Big Brother, with huge success on both shows.

As well as her media commitments, Ann is also in high demand for public speaking engagements and somehow finds time to be a prolific writer. She has a weekly column in the UK’s national paper, The Daily Express, has written five novels, a detective story, a religious book on penance and her memoirs, Strictly Ann.

ANN ON GAY MARRIAGE

  • Ann does not agree with gay marriage. She said in parliament that the State has no role in bedrooms but has commented: “I do not think homosexuality can be promoted as an equally valid lifestyle to heterosexual marriage.”

ANN ON IMMIGRATION

  • In 2001, Ann drove a policy in the Conservative manifesto for detaining all asylum applicants while their claims are being processed to help get “rid of those who were playing the system rather than applying on a truthful basis.” It was not implemented as the Conservatives lost the election, and Ann lamented in her column in the Express newspaper: “If only that had been done we wouldn’t be in the mess we are now.”

ANN ON BREXIT

  • Ann adamantly supports Brexit: “In short, we will get our sovereignty back.”

ANN ON SEXISM

  • Ann became a Member of Parliament in 1987. She held numerous posts during her prolific political career until retiring in 2010. She said she rarely encountered sexism in politics: “The only problem I found as a woman MP was insufficient loos.” Ann has condemned the snowflake mentality of modern women and says it is not what she and others were fighting for in the 1970s when “all we wanted was to show we are as good as, if not better than the men.”

ANN ON THE DEATH PENALTY

  • There is a “moral case” for the death penalty, says the former MP. Ann believes the re-introduction of the death penalty in the UK could potentially “save [innocent] lives”.
“There is a moral choice to be made. If it is a deterrent – let’s use the if – there is a moral choice to be made between saving the lives of the innocent and taking the lives of the guilty”.

ANN ON MEGHAN MARKLE

  • Ann warned Prince Harry’s wife Meghan Markle “could be trouble” and said the prospect of their marriage made her feel “uneasy”.

ANN ON HEALTH

  • Ann is a vociferous critic of the UK’s NHS (National Health Service) in its current form and doesn’t believe it is sustainable.
  • Ann believes that the US needs to learn from the failures of the NHS in any further reforms to health care.

ANN ON CLIMATE CHANGE

  • Ann points to climate change as ‘nonsense’ and is proud to have been one of the five MPs that voted against The Climate Change Act (2008)

ANN ON POLITICAL CORRECTNESS

  • Never afraid to speak her mind nor short of an opinion. To Ann, political correctness is “silencing a great body of thought.” And compared the UK to Soviet Russia.
  • Her frankness has made her one of Britain’s most quoted politicians: “In politics there is no right answer – and no final answer.”
